Hi,
When you have a lot to say you dont know where to start. Its the same situation one would find oneself in on seeing too many delicious dishes arranged on the dining table and not knowing what to have and what not to have.
But I am in a slightly advantageous position as I can expect the reader to be either a medical student or teacher or a doctor interested in medical teaching aids as is obvious from the title.
So let me just give you a background related to the topic.
I did my MBBS and MD [ Pathology ] from B.J . Medical college Pune which is a government medical college having a rich tradition of producing world class doctors. The range of different types of patients that one would get to see here in this 1200 bedded government general hospital is difficult to get anywhere else.
As a UG / PG medical student of this college , I had a habit of jotting down my own notes after reading any particular topic from various different books. Having an excellent handwriting and a good aesthetic sense , it was natural for that to get reflected in the quality of these notes and  teachers and friends used to marvel at my notes. Some even suggested me to write my own book. I used to say yes but never actually got down to writing my own book.
In the year 2006 while working as specialist pathologist in Riyadh region , Saudi Arabia , one fine evening a thought came to my mind : " Over the years I have made medical notes enough to fill 17 textbooks , made over 300 transparancies .... now why not make my own CD using my own notes as well as information available in standard medical textbooks ." By that time I had just purchased my first laptop.
The problems in front of me were immense. The most important of which was a very superficial ( say 2% of what I have now ) knowledge of using powerpoint , absolutely no knowledge of any other advanced animation software and 0 guidance from anyone ( as my computer engineer wife was in India at that time ).
On top of that I had the daunting task of making a product which would suit the diverse interests of doctors from different sub specialities , give information to the UG medical student and still retain interest from a superspecialist. I had absolutely no idea of the process of making a lock protected CD , absolutely no idea of who would do the marketing etc etc. Making CD and marketing it were distant goals . First I had to design the material to fill this CD.
So as I said , on that fine warm evening in summer season in Saudi Arabia , I began the uphill task of making this CD. I had to select topics to make presentations on. If I selected topics on ear , nose , throat or eye , it would serve the purpose of a smaller set of doctors. So I decided to select topics which would be useful to doctors of varying experiences and of different specialities like anemia , diabetes , jaundice , infection and immunity etc etc. I decided to make presentation on diseases such that any practitioner would encounter atleast 1 patient in his or her day to day practice suffering from these diseases.
The began the process of reading the topic from various books and on the net . Typing down notes using MS word , reading and editing and re - reading and re - editing. Adding , removing , modifying , beautifying and so on and so forth. The process continuing till I had a source word file from which to make a powerpoint presentation. Then began the process of making powerpoint presentation. I had very superficial knowlegde of ppt. But slowly and steadily as I kept on working on my presentation , my expertise built up and I slowly started mastering the finer nuances of this wonderful software and excelled to an extent that graphic artists ( who are masters in this field ) expressed surprise when they saw the complexity of some of the animations that I made using such a  basic software such as powerpoint with very much limited capacities when it comes to animations.
As I went along my presentations got richer in information more complete and almost covered all aspects of any particular disease beginning with knowledge of relevant aspects of anatomy , physiology , biochemistry , pharmacology and pathology needed to understand that particular topic , going ahead with clinical diagnosis , pathology and radiology investigations , differential diagnosis and ending the presentation with allopathic medical management , allopathic surgical management as well as a touch up on homeopathy , ayurved , yoga , mudra..... in short everything related to that disease in one place.
I am happy to tell the reader of this blog , that some similies , concepts that I have cleared in this CD are unique and not to be found in any textbook anywhere in the world.
This CD will be immensely beneficial to UG / PG medical students of allopathic , homeopathic and ayurvedic medical colleges , for nursing and dental college students , for teachers of these colleges as a teaching aid , for any senior doctor wanting to rebrush knowledge and for non medicos wanting to understand any disease in a better way.
I have added poems , quiz , test your understanding slides and numerous animations to make the presentations interesting. Being audio visual its a great memory aid. Teaching various diseases using these aids is a great experience , as I have often used slides from my own CD while coaching doctors for post graduate medical entrance examination.
It has taken me 4000 hours of hard work to finally make this CD which started as one set of 9 diseases and now has enlarged to 34 diseases / topics with 780 text based pages and almost 5000 powerpoint slides. Its available only with me and the user can have a CD tailor made to his / her needs by selecting the topics of his / her choice.
With warm regards and best wishes to the readers of this blog
